Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Benefits
  • The focused x-ray beam reduces scatter radiation, resulting in better image quality.
  • A single scan produces a wide variety of views and angles that can be manipulated to provide a more complete evaluation.
  • Cone beam CT scans provide more information than conventional dental x-ray, allowing for more precise treatment planning.
  • CT scanning is painless, non-invasive and accurate.
  • A major advantage of CT is its ability to image bone and soft tissue at the same time.
  • The x-rays used for CT scanning should have no immediate side effects.
Risks
  • There is always a slight chance of cancer from excessive exposure to radiation. However, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the risk involved with CT scanning.
  • Because children are more sensitive to radiation, they should have a CT exam only if it is essential for making a diagnosis. CT scans in children should always be done with low-dose technique.

  • Oral and Maxillofacial radiologist will analyse the CBCT scan. They may discuss the results with you directly or communicate the results to your referring physician or dentist. Upon completion of the radiology report, the referrer will receive an automated text notification, followed by an email containing a secure link to download the report. Registered users may also log in to the Fusion Radiology portal to view imaging and access the report directly.

  • When radiation passes through the body, some of it is absorbed. The x-rays that are not absorbed are used to create the image. The amount the patient absorbs contributes to the patient's radiation dose. Radiation that passes through the body does not contribute to this dose. The scientific unit of measurement for whole body radiation dose, called "effective dose," is the  millisievert (mSv) . Here are some approximate comparisons of background radiation and effective radiation dose in adults for dental radiology procedures. These values can vary greatly, depending on the size of the patient and the type of imaging technology being used. Manufacturers of imaging technology continue to make improvements towards reducing radiation exposure while maintaining image quality.
